Released in 1991 off the Woodface album, this Crowded House song is a hit with the crowds (pardon the pun!). The song is unusual in that it has harmonies all the way through, on every word. Probably due to the addition of Neil Finn‘s brother Tim Finn to the band at that time.
Song Notes: The original song is recorded in the key of F, which is unusual for a guitar song. They achieve this by putting a capo on the 3rd fret of the guitar and playing the chords from the “D” formation. This is what gives the song that jangly open chord sound. Both brothers Neil and Tim have perfect pitch, so they make the harmonies in this song sound easy. But trust us, there’s some tricky parts in here.
Backing Track Notes: We have this song available in two keys (E and F). We have a standard MP3 version in E, which is the easiest key to play this song on guitar, but it does drop the vocals 1 semitone, so take that into account. We also have a REAL Track version in the original key of F. This version includes the vocal harmony line that Tim Finn sings throughout the entire song. It may sound a little odd by itself, but the idea is that you sing the melody line over the top. If you find it hard to hear the (missing) melody line, it starts on the “F note” as below.

Ready or not, here comes the drop…
It’s Only Natural
Crowded House
Ice will melt, water will boil
You and I, can shake off this mortal coil
It’s bigger than us, you don’t have to worry about it
Ready or not, here comes the drop
You feel lucky when you know where you are
You know it’s gonna come true, here in your arms I remember
It’s only natural, that I should want to be there with you
It’s only natural, that you should feel the same way too
It’s easy when you don’t try going on first impressions
Man in a cage, has made his confession now
You’ve seen me at my worst, and it won’t be the last time I’m down there
I want you to know I feel completely at ease
Read me like a book, that’s fallen down between your knees
Please… let me have my way with you
It’s only natural, that I should want to be there with you
It’s only natural, that you should feel the same way too
It’s circumstantial, it’s nothing written in the sky
And we don’t even have to try…
INSTRUMENTAL
But we’ll be shaking like mud, buildings of glass
Sink into the bay, they’ll be under the rocks again
You don’t have to say, I know you’re afraid
It’s only natural… that I should want to be there with you
It’s only natural… that you should feel the same way too
It’s circumstantial, it’s something I was born to
It’s only natural, can I help it if I want to?
Ooh… (can I help it if I want to)
