Released in 1973 on the album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. This iconic piano ballad was written about Marilyn Monroe who was born Norma Jean Baker, this is one of the best known and loved ballads in the world. Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics after hearing the phrase “candle in the wind” used in a tribute to Janis Joplin. Taupin later remarked: “I just kept hearing this term and I thought, what a great way of describing someone’s life”.  That’s great songwriting!

Candle in the Wind is a constant fixture in Rolling Stone Magazine’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It has indeed stood the test of time and you will find that audiences of all ages readily sing along with it, knowing every word. Make sure you have this classic song in your repertoire.
