This iconic piano ballad was written about Marilyn Monroe who was born Norma Jean Baker, this is one of the best known and loved ballads in the world. Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics after hearing the phrase “candle in the wind” used in a tribute to Janis Joplin. Taupin later remarked: “I just kept hearing this term and I thought, what a great way of describing someone’s life”. That’s great songwriting!
