The classic hit from the Aussie rock music icon Richard Clapton. Released in 1975, the song was written about young men cruising the streets of Kings Cross and being seduced by prostitutes – who at the time would ply their trade on street corners before it became illegal to do so. Oxford Street would be lined with cars pulled over and scantily clad women leaning into the car windows to do a deal. It became a pastime just to cruise the street to watch this spectacle.
The original track features some beautiful guitar work by session slide guitarist extraordinaire Kirk Lorange. Kirk has played on countless hits for major music stars for over 40 years, but he only ever released one album himself, titled “No Apostrophe” (great name, can you figure out why?)
Track Notes: Our REAL track includes acoustic and electric guitar and backing vocals.
Girls on the Avenue
Richard Clapton
Girls on the avenue
They’re tryin’ to get you in
Strollin’ by with their rosebud smiles
They’re all dressed up to kill
Lean on the window sill
Lookin’ your way with eyes of fire
But don’t you slip, don’t you slip
In love with the girls on the avenue
Friday night, see the girls on the avenue
Like a child at big store windows
You feel confused, so many girls on the avenue
Girls on the avenue know how to get you in
Casting out sighs like tricks from a hat
All the miss lonely hearts, ooh, they look awful hard
And sometimes they seem as fragile as glass
But don’t you slip, don’t you slip
In love with the girls on the avenue
Friday night, see the girls on the avenue
Like a child at big store windows
You feel confused, so many girls on the avenue
Ah, ah ah, ah ah, ah ah
Ah, ah ah, ah ah, ah ah
Don’t you slip, don’t you slip
In love with the girls on the avenue
Don’t you slip, don’t you slip
In love with the girls on the avenue
Don’t you slip, don’t you slip
In love with the girls on the avenue
